Urban and Village Renewal Scheme.
During the month of September two members of the Cork County Council staff visited the area to examine our proposals. The following schemes were proposed and were accepted by the C.C.C.
1. At Goat’s Path: Tables, chairs, bicycle racks, refuge containers and information boards be put in place.
2. A seat be placed in the Kilcrohane graveyard.
3. A short walk around the village of Kilcrohane be sighposted and put in place. (This is subject to Community Council obtaining permission from a land owner to use part of owners land)
4. E.S.B. to extend lighting in Ahakista.
Formal confirmation of these proposals is expected shortly.
Toureen Public Toilets.
The toilets sub-committee is still awaiting the go-ahead from Cork County Council to proceed with the seeking of tenders for this project. All preliminary work has been done by the sub-committee and they have being waiting for many months to obtain the neccessary grant aid from the C.C.C. It is to be deplored that this project is being held up by factors outside our control.
Snakes Lane Road Improvement.
The road from The Cove to Kealties, known as "Snakes Lane" is to have improvements carried out very soon. The worst corners will be removed to afford "Line of sight" to those travelling on this road. Land owners have given their permission to have ditches removed and the C.C.C. have agreed with your Community Council to replace the ditches with fences. Local people will be asked to contribute to the cost of this project. Stamped addressed envelopes will be distributed shortly for contributions. It is to be hoped a generous response will result.
Museum.
Considerable progress has been made with this project. After many months of delay, due to legal aspects, it appears that within a short time your Community Council should be in a position to move things forward. In accordance with the wishes of the late Alice West the main attraction will be a permanent exhibition of Alice’s museum. This may be augmented with other suitable local artifacts, if they become available. As well as this the possibility of using the house as a Heritage centre and/or exhibitions by locally based artists and sculptors. Tourist information may also be available there. Before anything is done a considerable amount of work has to be done to the building itself as it has fallen into disrepair by being unoccupied for a long period. Your Community Council would like to hear of any further proposals for this house. Contact any member of Council.
Phone kiosks.
The Council would like to inform you that it has been told by Eircom that a phone kiosk is to be replaced on the North side of the peninsula. It appears that it’s most likely position will be near the pier at Gearies.
Bantry Integrated Development Group.
B.I.D.G. are continuing their weekly attendance at the Hall, Kilcrohane. If you have problems with REPS, Social Security, or indeed, any problem of a farming or personal nature you should call to the Hall any Tuesday. There is no need to make an appointment, just drop in. The service is totally confidential and is free of charge to all members of the community.
E-MAILS.
The Community Council web site,www.kilcrohane.net has had many e-mails from people with connections with the area. Among the most recent ones. were requests for information about the following people.....Jeremiah Bohane and his wife, Margaret Sullivan from the Donore/Foilakilly area. They went to U.S.A around 1847.

Harry Arundel Ward’s mother, Margaret, was born in Ahakista in 1886. He is seeking relations in the area.

Sub-Committee Reports.

Sub_Committees.
There are now nine sub-committes in the Community Council. All of them are active and working hard for the benefit of this community. The chief difficulty the Committees are experiencing is the very slow response from public bodies such as Government departments and the County Council. An example of this is, the Toilet Sub-Committee has written on many occasions to the Cork County Council about the commencement of building the proposed toilets at Toureen. Many phones calls have also been made to the relevant department within the C.C.C. Up to now, no response has been received. Planning permission has been granted and the Sub-Committee is ready to seek tenders for the building but cannot proceed until funding is granted by the County Council. Your Community Council find that this tardyiness by public bodies is extremely frustrating. The Housing Sub-Committee are experiencing similar difficulties. They have applied to C.C.C. for a site for sheltered housing for lone elderly persons but, again, response from the statuary body has been very slow. Your Council is doing every thing possible to try to get these projects underway.
Bantry Intergrated Development Group.
The above group recently met with the Community Council and it was agreed that they would operate an Outreach Programme in the hall in Kilcrohane. It is hoped that this will begin in July. B.I.D.G. will have trained personel in the hall for one day a week to answer your queries on almost all areas of interest from your Welfare entitlements to r.e.p.s. to job opportunities and career guidance. All quieries will be treated with the strictest confidence. It is hoped that this facility will be utilised to the full. Further information about the commencement of this scheme will be placed on the Community Council notice boards.
Ahakista Regatta.
This Sub-Committee has drawn up a fantastic programme for the August week-end. Apart from the usual water based events, there will be dancing in the marquee, live theatre, best scarecrow competition and a host of other events. Watch out for more details closer to the time.

Urban and Village Renewal Grant
The Community Council has recently been awarded a grant of £10,000-00 under the above scheme. The proposals submitted for grant aid were as follows,
Removal of all overhead wires in Kilcrohane village.
Provision of footpath from Church View to Post office.
Planting of trees in village.
Upgrading of derelict site in village.
Full details of the grant has not yet been received, neither do we know if it will be possible to implement the above proposals as we need the co-operation of others to do so. Any one with opinions about the use of grant should contact their local representative on the council or any council member.
New Council Members.
Two new members have been co-opted to the Council. They are Rose O’Donovan and Karen Klopp. Both these new members were co-opted to fill vacancies on the Council. Under the rules of the Council vacancies must be filled by the person obtaining the next highest number of votes. We are certain that Rose and Karen will have valuable contributions to make to Council affairs.
Rose’s area is Area A. Ballyieragh, Ballyroon, Ballyroon Mt., Cahergal, Caherulagh, Clash, Eskrara, Gortavallig, Laharandota, Letter West. Reagh and Toureen.
Karen’s area is Area J, Reenacapul,Rossnacaheragh, and Tullig.
Refuse Collection.
The Council has spent a huge amount of time discussing the rubbish collection issue. It is felt that the Cork Council Council have committed themselves to the wheelie bin system without considering the implications for those who live a long distance from the collection points. It appears grossly unfair to expect an elderly person to push a heavy wheelie bin a distance of one mile to a collection point, as is the case in parts of the peninsula. Your Council are actively pressing the matter with the C.C.C.
The provision of recycling bins in the area is also ongoing and positive news should be forthcoming shortly.
Thanks are due to all those who helped in the "Big Cleanup" on 9 June last. A vast amount of garbage was collected. Thanks are also due to Richie Tobin and his crew for organising the removal of the rubbish collected from the area. Finally, we have been informed by the Cork County Council that from now on, rubbish will be collected on the Saturday BEFORE a bank Holiday Monday.
Euro Information.
In September, Mr Pat O’Leary will be giving a talk in the Hall, Kilcrohane about the Euro and it’s implications. Mr O’Leary gave a presentation at the Council A,G.M. about the subject and has agreed to repeat it in September next. More details nearer the time.
Ahakista Payphone.
The Community Council have been in contact with Eircom plc. about their proposed removal of the payphone in Ahakista. Eircom have stated that this kiosk is not being used enough to justify it’s retention. Obviously we totally disagree with this and have made the strongest protest at Eircom’s proposal.

New Community notice boards for Kilcrohane
and the Northside have been purchased by the MBCC. A third notice board
to be placed in Ahakista is currently being built. We hope to have the
notice boards in place and operating before too long.
Anyone who wishes to place a notice on the board should contact the name indicated
on the boards. A charge of £1.00 per week will be charged for commercial
notices. This is to help recuperate the cost of the boards.
