Sponsored Slim - Community Weight Loss Challenge

Thirty brave individuals have signed up to take part in the sponsored slim – community weight loss challenge and they are now heading into the 3rd month of the challenge.

Those taking part have attended two cookery demonstrations in the Good Things Café in Durrus and have come away with some very tasty recipes courtesy of Carmel Somers to help them reach their targets over the coming weeks.

Fra Wiseman, Practice Nurse continues to volunteer to do our regular weigh ins which are taking place in a number of venues on the peninsula. Keep an eye out for our posters for further information.

Each of the individuals taking part in the challenge have a sponsorship card. If you want to sponsor them you can give a one off donation or you can sponsor them a set amount for each pound they lose. The choice is yours! General sponsorship cards have also been distributed to local businesses in the area.

What will the money raised be used for?

All funds raised will be targeted at the youth in our community. The youth sub committee of the Muintir Bháire Community Council is going to set up a youth club for children aged under 12 years of age and having researched the possibilities, we are proposing to set up the Muintir Bháire Sea Scouts for children aged 6 to 12 years. Some of the funds raised will also be donated to the Muintir Bháire Foroige Club whose members range from aged 12 to 18 years of age.

Volunteering on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula

In today’s busy world, it can be hard to think about finding time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous, both to you, your family and the community.

Volunteering in the community enables individuals to have an input into improving community services in the area in which they live.

The right match can also help you find friends, learn new skills and even advance your career.

You don't have to join a club or attend meetings to become a volunteer. You can simply volunteer at a time that fits your schedule for specific events or projects in the area at any given time.

Benefits of volunteering:

• One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together

• It also strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, and fun and fulfilling activities.

• Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills.

• Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction.

• Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to an area.

• One of the best ways to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships is to commit to a shared activity together.

Volunteering as a family

While it might be a challenge to coordinate everyone’s schedules, volunteering as a family has many worthwhile benefits.

Children watch everything you do. By giving back to the community, you show them firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help others and enact change. It’s also a valuable way for you to get to know organisations in the community and find resources and activities for your children and family.

How to get involved?

There are many ways one can get involved in volunteering on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula. Volunteers are more than welcome to get involved in any of the following:

Muintir Bhaire Community Council is involved in a number of projects and our committee hosts various events throughout the year.

We have a number of sub committees which are involved in a number of areas i.e. older and younger people’s services, tidy towns, defibrillator group, environment, roads and services, In addition, the community council owns and runs Alice West’s @ The Black Gate , this facility includes a tea room, museum and apartment for rent.

We also publish a quarterly newsletter and run educational talks and courses throughout the
year.

If you are interested in volunteering in any of these areas, please contact uintirbhairecc@gmail.com or 083 1110983 or you may contact anyone of our Committee members for further information.

Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club is a newly formed youth club in the parish. We currently have 34 members and 11 leaders.

As a Foróige club leader you will support the members of our club to run the club on a weekly basis. Your job will be to facilitate the members to run the club and get involved in projects and other developmental activities.

If you are interested in becoming a Foróige Club Leader please contact Michael O’Regan on 087 2210040 or Annette Logan on 086 1910908 or alternatively e mail mbforoigeclub@gmail.com

Muintir Bhaire Sea Scouts Club will be looking for individuals who would like an opportunity to work with the young people in their community.

This opportunity will not only allow you to help develop the future of these young people and their future contribution to your area but will also be a lot of fun!

For further details please contact Kieran Connolly on 087 7601313 or Annette Logan on 086 1910908.

Ahakista Community Association.

Volunteering with ACA does not mean you have to attend monthly meetings, just give us your contact details & we will get in touch when we need an extra pair of hands e.g. for a beach or
road side clean up, tidy towns, planting, helping out at fundraising events etc.

If you are interested in volunteering with ACA e mail sec@ahakista.org or telephone 086-1012150 for further information.

• If you are interested in joining a Choir in the parish, please contact Fr. Gerard Galvin on 027 61013 or 087 6864874
