Muintir Bhaire Social Activities Group

THE Social Activities Group will hold their next monthly lunch on Wednesday, September 26, in Kilcrohane Community Hall at 12.30pm.

Everyone is welcome and it would be really nice to see new people joining. If you already attend, why not bring along a friend or a neighbour?

The group will start a furniture cleaning and restoration project on some of the older pieces of furniture from Alice West's house at the Black Gate.

We invite anyone interested to come along, especially men with relevant skills, and help us to bring these lovely pieces back to their former glory.

The first four weeks of the project will take place in Kilcrohane Community Hall on Tuesday mornings from 10.30am to 12.30pm approximately, starting Tuesday, October 2.

We will have the basic tools and materials but please bring along any spare chisels, etc. Looking forward to seeing lot of furniture enthusiasts; oh, and of course there will be tea and biscuits!!!!!

The group are hoping to do a lace making and knitting / crochet in November so keep an eye out for posters nearer the time. It is also planned to have a floral arrangement / demonstration workshop in early December with a view to making a Christmas table centrepiece.

The ladies group meets every Tuesday morning at Kilcrohane Community Hall at 10.30am and we always welcome new ladies to join us.

For further information on any of the above items, please do not hesitate to contact Julie O' Neill, Kilcrohane Social Activities Co-ordinator, on (086) 1721279.

Mayor of Muintir Bhiire Parish

The Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club wanted to promote one of Muintir Bhaire's greatest assets, our people.

Some 27 individuals were nominated with 6 clear candidates: Eileen Lehane, & James O'Mahony, Kilcrohane; Shane Arundel & Tadgh Hegarty, Ahakista; John Ross & Paul Stock, Durrus.

An independent adjudicator confirmed the winner deemed by the voters to be;

a central character and a good representative for the parish
a regular contributor to local charitable organisations and involved in fundraising for local youth and sporting groups
a good ambassador for the peninsula because they always promote the area.
• a great man and pulls a good pint!

There could only be one winner and John Ross was appointed Mayor of Muintir Bhaire Parish on behalf of Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club on Sun, August 5, at the Ahakista Festival Regatta.

Muintir Bhaire Community Sponsored Slim

THE Youth Sub Committee of Muintir Bhaire Community Council held a 13-week sponsored slim to raise money for the Muintir Bhaire Sea Scouts and the Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club.

Thirty brave individuals signed up to take part in the challenge, which proved to be a huge success!

The 30 slimmers lost a total of 28 stone, 71bs and 7oz between them and raised €3,480.

Jennie Barry of Reenmore, Ahakista, won 1" prize for losing the most weight and Mary O'Donovan of Kilcrohane won 2nd prize.

A huge thank you to all the slimmers who took part in the challenge and to everyone who sponsored them.

We would also like to thank Fra Wiseman and Deirdre Connolly for facilitating the weigh ins throughout the 13-week challenge and to the businesses who allowed us to use their venues for the public weigh-ins.

Our thanks to Fiona Keohane from Kick Start, Bernadette O'Riordan, Community Nurse, and Claire Haseldine, Community Physiotherapist, for their support. Finally, we sincerely thank Carmel Somers from Good Things Cafe, Durrus, for kindly donating her time, providing cookery demonstrations and sponsoring our prizes.

Sheep's Head Producers' Group

The Sheep's Head Producers Group thank everyone who has supported the Sunday Market and the Market Shop at the Old Creamery.

While the outdoor Sunday Market will postpone trading during the winter season, we intend to keep the shop open with plans to hold a Christmas market in early December.

Watch out for more news and dates. We welcome new volunteers willing to cover just one shift of 3 hours per month.

The range of items for sale continues to expand as people within the community put their creativity to work, revealing that the Peninsula has many aspiring entrepreneurs.

The selection of fresh produce has even boasted Kilcrohane grapes whilst the
wide range of handicrafts has proved a vital source for last minute wedding and birthday gifts!

We are now taking orders for local lamb and we hope to offer chilled products soon. The benefits of locally produced food are many and not only in terms of providing healthy food.

Producers are encouraged to get involved as the need to develop a thriving local economy becomes ever more important.

So, start planning now for a garden of produce in the next growing season. If you want to turn your hand to growing a few vegetables, but lack the know-how or confidence to get stuck in on your own, why not come along to gardening sessions in Kilcrohane next spring.

Cork County Council has agreed that some council land, currently a neglected communal grass area in the village, can be turned over for use as an allotment garden for growing vegetables. Anyone interested should enquire at the Market Shop or contact Kate: 076 6154941 or Tony: 086 0897261.

The Sheep's Head Way

130 WALKERS took part in the annual Christian Aid Sheep's Head Hike on Saturday, Sept 1st. The high walk went up east Suifin and on to Baran returning to Kilcrohane via Farranamanagh strand; the low walk started at Atha Thomais visiting the Stone circle at Ahakista and then walked the old road from Ahakista also returning via Farranamanagh strand.

The two groups of walkers converged on the strand and Canon Patrick Hewitt reminded the walkers that the 1Okm distance walked that day would be a daily necessity for many in other parts of the world, whether to collect water, medicines or simply to go to school.

The money raised by this walk is going to help the people of Haiti - a long way from Kilcrohane!

Charlie McCarthy gave a great (and sometime humorous) talk on the history of the area.

On return to Kilcrohane, Ulla, who generously donated the refreshments for the walkers, served delicious soup and sandwiches. Andrew Coleman of Christian Aid Ireland expressed his gratitude to all those who helped and supported the walk, especially the local guides, and is already planning next year's hike!

The results are in!

The Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club wanted to promote one of Muintir Bháire’s greatest assets, our people.  So we started our search for the Mayor of our Parish.

We were delighted with the interest this initiative generated and when the voting boxes were opened it was obvious that there was going to be some stiff competition!

Here are some of the facts!

27 Individuals were nominated to become Mayor in total with 10 of them out in the lead early into the count.

We had a total of 328 votes and only 22 spoiled votes.

When the count was finished we had 6 potential candidates and these were:

1.   Eileen Lehane, Kilcrohane

2.   James O’Mahony, Kilcrohane

3.   Shane Arundel, Ahakista

4.   Tadgh Hegarty, Ahakista

5.   John Ross, Durrus

6.   Paul Stock, Durrus

An independent adjudicator reviewed the comments on why one of these six people should be our Mayor and decided on the winner for the following reasons which were given by the voters; This person is

*    A central character and a good representative for the Muintir Bhaire Parish.

*    A regular contributor to local charitable organisations and involved in funding raising for local youth and sporting groups.

*    A good ambassador for the peninsula because they always promote the area.

*    A great man and pulls a good pint!

There could only be one winner and John Ross was appointed Mayor of Muintir Bhaire Parish on behalf of Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club on Sunday, 5th August at the Ahakista Festival Regatta.

Sheep's Head Producers' Market launch new shop!

The Producers' Market group who hold the regular 11 am- 1pm Sunday Market in Kilcrohane were delighted to be offered the use of premises at the Old Creamery to run a Community Shop.

The shop provides opportunities for small-scale food production and cottage industry-style enterprise. Keeping the focus on produce from the Peninsula, the shop will be open during the week to sell fresh veg, eggs, bread, cakes as well as crafts, pottery, paintings and a variety of other local products.

It is hoped that the shop will also encourage visitors to make use of other village amenities.

The Sheep's Head Producers group welcome new stallholders to join up. A small commission is taken from sales to cover insurance and other costs and a community stall is available for anyone who has just a few items to offer.

"We're looking for volunteers who might like to mind the shop for a few hours even if they aren't interested in selling their own produce.

It's a chance to meet people regularly and a great way to get to know who's around if you're new to the area.

Anyone interested should just call into the shop." And be sure to join us for the Grand Opening on Sat, July 7 from 2pm!

The Sheep's Head Way

The National Trails Office annual inspection will take place in July this year.

The inspection is detailed and the inspector walks every metre of the Sheep's Head Way.

Recurring issues last year were:

Electric fences blocking the trail

Wet/boggy/ undrained stretches of trail

Lack of strimming

The mid-year Walks Scheme payment is now due. With this and the annual inspection in mind, we are reminding landowners to maintain their stretch of trail to the highest possible standard as failure to do so may result in loss of payment.

A Geology Walk and Cheese Tasting in June taking in the Sheep's Head Way was a great success. Geologist Dr Ronan Hennessy led the 2.5 hour loop walk from Durrus Cheese Farm ( ww.durruscheese.com), exploring the local landscape

On return, walkers tasted the cheeses made on the farm.

Plans are afoot to repeat the event so watch this space and THE SHEEPS HEAD WAY official facebook page (not the bogus page!).

Be sure to join us for the Sheep's Head Way walk at the Ahakista Regatta on Sat, Aug 4, registration at 10:30am.

Sheep's Head Easter Run a great success!

THE inaugural Sheep's Head Run took place in ideal weather conditions on Easter Saturday. A total of 331 people took part in this new 10k road race.

An unusual feature was that roughly 54 per cent of those who took part were women, well up on the usual 35 per cent seen in most races.

The winner of the men's race was Don Keohane of Eagle AC in a time of 36:02, while Maura Regan of the same club was the winner in the women's section.

Congratulations are extended to local participants Michael Harrington and Sean Levis who finished seventh and eleventh, respectively.

Full details of the runners and results are available on the 'running in Cork' blog at corkrunning.blogspot.com

The Ahakista Rowing Club wishes to extend its sincere thanks to all the people of the locality who worked so hard to make the event such a resounding success. The club also wishes to thank its sponsors and the participants who came from far and near.

The proceeds of the event will go towards the day-to -day running of the club. Photographs can be seen on the Sheep's Head Easter Run Facebook page.

Muintir Bhaire Foroige Club update

MEMBERS of the youth club have been very busy over the past number of months.

Garda Brendan O'Dwyer and Garda Damien White gave a talk at one of our club nights.

Some of our members took part in the Sheep's Head Easter Run and others volunteered to help out with the refreshments.

Our club members helped out at the Easter Egg Hunt and took part in the National Spring Clean beach cleanup in April.

We had a pizza and movie night and we went to Foroige Club discos in Skibbereen and in Clonakilty.

We would like to say a big thank you to the Cork Orienteering Club who kindly offered to show our club what is involved in orienteering and we would also like to say thank you to beautician Catriona McCarthy, beautician, for providing a skincare talk and makeup demonstration for our club members recently.

We are taking a break from our weekly Friday night club nights from the end of April until the beginning of September, but we have a few activities planned for the coming months and these include:

A fundraising, guided walk on the Sheep's Head Way at the end of May (only open to members of Foroige Clubs in West Cork).

Helping out with the Tidy Towns initiatives in our area this year.

Launching the search for the Mayor of Muintir Bhaire Parish in May to honour achievement and celebrate Muintir Bhaire's greatest asset our people! See above for more details.

Plans to build some rafts for the Ahakista Regatta Raft Race. Work will commence on this project in July.

A registration night for members (existing and new) to join the club for 2012/2013 will take place in early September and the weekly club nights will recommence mid-September.

Foroige is the leading youth organisation in Ireland working with some 57,000 young people aged 10—18 years of age through volunteer-led clubs and staff-led projects.

Sheep's Head Producers' Market is back!

THE Sheep's Head Producers Market is now in its second year!

The success of the first season was very encouraging and after a winter break there was plenty of renewed enthusiasm to get us going again.

The 2012 season kicked off on Easter Sunday. With the weather staying fine, a good crowd of local residents and tourists enjoyed their browsing and shopping. There was a great range of produce with nine regular stallholders from last year and two new stalls making their debut.

The variety of local produce and crafts is continuing to expand. Currently, we have fresh bread, cakes and home baking (including gluten-free options), jams, sauces and preserves, fresh eggs, veggies, potatoes, potted plants as well as paintings, cards, pottery, and other home-made crafts. A new addition is traditional home-made carrageen milk pudding!

All our stallholders are residents, making or growing their produce on the Peninsula.

The market was originally set up specifically to provide an outlet for locally-produced food or crafts and to encourage small-scale, local enterprise as a source of income.

Last summer's regular events attracted visitors into the area from around West Cork and the market has already enabled a couple of'cottage industry' style ventures to be launched.

As the variety of produce continues to increase, we expect the market to become a popular place to shop every Sunday morning. We're always interested to know what other items people might want to buy. As yet, we don't have any local meat or wide selection of dairy products, so there's definitely the opportunity for someone with initiative to fill the niche.

Contact us through the website www.sheepsheadco -operative.org or phone 0766154941.

The next market will be on the May Bank Holiday weekend, Sunday, May 6th, 11 am-1pm, and then each Sunday through to the autumn.

Find us outside Eileen's Bar in Kilcrohane Village.

Sheep's Head Way — research highlights opportunities for local businesses

A RECENT study into walking in West Cork identified a need for more targeted accommodation in the Sheep's Head area for walkers such as B&B and self-catering facilities designed for the needs of such active tourists.

Grants are available from West Cork Development Partnership to help in this provision.

The research indicates there are other opportunities also, for example food premises or accommodation providers offering walker-friendly meal deals and extra-large sandwiches or retailers specialising in outdoor and hiking gear and apparel like gaiters.

See the West Cork Development Partnership website www.wcdp.ie/walking-study/ to view the full research report or contact Jean O'Sullivan at 023 8834035 for more info.
